I spent nearly half of July exploring Montana, beginning with a project with Visit Montana that had me road trip across the eastern half of the state. If you’d like to see more eye candy from that experience, have a look at my 13 Images to Inspire your own Eastern Montana Road Trip post. A few days after I arrived home, I headed south on a whim to explore Glacier National Park. I’d crisscrossed the mountains during my Tour Divide ride in 2016; however, I wanted to revisit the area with my camera equipment in tow.
Both trips were absolutely incredible, but I was actually more impressed by the less-visited prairies than the awe-inspiring Rockies. Perhaps its simply because the Rocky Mountains in Montana are part of the Northern Rockies, which mean they look quite similar to the mountains outside my front door. The prairies were unlike anything I’d ever experienced. They weren’t a continuous flat plain that I expected, but rather an undulating landscape broken up by deep river valleys and small mountain ranges.
A third trip to Montana – once again by bicycle – might still happen this summer, but it’ll be hard to fit in between my busy work schedule. Until then, I hope we can make do with these desktop wallpapers from the Fort Benton, Montana, area.

I’d recognize Square Butte and the Little Belts-Shonkin-Highwood area anytime, even after being away for 50 years. You have captured them beautifully!
Thanks! That photo has been surprisingly popular!
Do you have these pictures on canvas or print?
Wow, you’ve found an old image! I regularly print on both aluminum and canvas, but I can also do paper prints. Are you interested in making a purchase?
Truth be told, the image of Square Butte Montana is my best selling print! It looks phenomenal on matte prints and canvas.
Thank you for capturing my favorite part of Montana so beautifully- and thank you for providing free downloads and iPhone sized pictures!
