June & July 2023 Issue: Tour de France Preview; Alison Jackson’s Paris Roubaix Pave; You need to ride a stage race this summer.
In Spring 2023, Canadian Cycling Magazine invited me to capture their cover for the Tour De France Preview Issue.
Although I had contributed nearly 40 stories to the magazine, this was the first oppunity I had to capture the cover. Later in the year, I also wrote In Cumberland, Biking Is Life, for the magazine.
Oddly enough, I had never seen the video cover in it’s finall layout until recently. Just this month, I purchased an Apple iPad Pro. Because it came with a free 3-month subscription to Apple News+, I was able to scroll back and relive this moment.
If you subscribe to Apple News+, you should be able to view the cover and read the magazine.
Canadian Cycling Magazine Cover Photoshoot
To create the cover, I traveled to Vancouver to collaborate with Jordan Behan. The shoot was supported by Giant Canada, Rapha, and Smith, providing an excellent kit for the project. I absolutely love that it was the Maghalie Rochette jersey, as she’s always been one of my favourite canadian racers.
Photo editor Matthew Stetson selected the image on the right as the cover. It worked perfectly, incoporating the cycling kit, view of downtown Vancouver and the layers of the Cypress Road Climb in Vancouver.
The images below were also created throughout the day, along with the 15-second video. Overall, I couldn’t be more stoked to relive this memory and share these images, many of them for the first time.
Big thanks to Canadian Cycling Magazine and Jordan Behan for making this happen. The shoot also turned out to be pivotal in my own cycling journey, but I’ll share that story another day.
