SkiBC – Instagramming the Powder Highway

January 17, 2014 by Jeff B. 5 Comments

Despite being a lifelong skier and growing up in British Columbia, I had never visited British Columbia’s Kootenay Mountains. The Powder Highway seemed like a myth, nothing more than a fantastical collection of powder snow, ski resorts, and snow-covered asphalt.

When Tourism British Columbia asked if I’d be interested in a SkiBC instagram adventure on the Powder Highway, I couldn’t refuse. The itinerary had all the elements I wanted: three new ski resorts (Kicking Horse, Whitewater, and Red Mountain), awesome traveling companions (pro snowboarders Leanne Polesi and Jeff Keenan and filmmaker Aaron Maksymec), and a welcome challenge to produce 3 great images each day.

We couldn’t have timed our trip down the Powder Highway with better timing. Five of six days were full-fledged powder days.

My SkiBC Images

Kicking Horse Mountain Resort (Golden, BC)

Love it! Dinosaurs Will Die owner Jeff Keenan drops into a big white line.

Whitewater Ski Resort (Nelson, BC)

Jeff Keenan likes what he sees: blue skies and deep powder.Filmmaker Aaron Maksymec sets his camera down to slash a turn. Leanne Polesi airing slack-country pillows at Whiterwater Ski Resort. Whitewater's chairlifts aren't exactly modern, but they access the best tree skiing I've ever seen. More than just the SKIBC photographer, I set down my camera for a turn in the pillows at Whiterwater Resort.

Red Mountain Resort and Big Red Cats (Rossland, BC)

Our SkiBC trip ended at Red Mountain Resort, where the The Kootenay Sea, a think fog that lines the valley, is common. An epic golden hour SKIBC descent with Big Red Cats. Leanne Polesi dropping in for another run at Big Red Cats. Leanne Polesi takes in the Big Red Cats view. The Kootenay Sea at high tide, when the mountains go white.

Yes they are! Explosives are used to trigger avalanches, to safely control an area where skiers will be!
