Daily Square: Friday Instagrammer Rory Tucker

December 12, 2014 by Jeff B. Leave a Comment

As I promised way back when I featured instagrammer Garry Norris’s photography, I want my Daily Square series to include a friday instagrammer shoutout. The project finally has some momentum; I have interviews and photos rolling in from several photographers I truly admire.

I’m kicking off the Friday Instagrammer series with @RoryTucker, a talented photographer and interactive designer based in Squamish, British Columbia. He’s also the creator of the brilliant IG series called #thattrainbridge.

Friday Instagrammer: I walk past this bridge nearly everyday. It has become a favourite subject and I appreciate shooting and editing it in all kinds of light, weather, compositions and edits. On it's own the bridge project is a fun and challenging creative exercise.

Q: How long have you been on Instagram and what’s your favourite photography subject?

A: I’ve been @rorytucker since November 2010. While i might be well known for the train bridge that I shoot frequently, and I love shooting the landscape around where I live, my favourite subjects are my two young boys. Capturing daily moments with them, whether on an adventure or just playing in the yard, really makes me smile.

I asked my son Gus to pose for a portrait and this is what he did with no direction. This shot was a breakthrough for me as it was selected to be featured byInstagram as part of the Weekend Hashtag Project.

Love this shot as it typifies what mobile photography is all about. Grabbing those precious moments as they happen, anywhere, anytime.

Q: What’s the coolest place IG has allowed you to travel? Where do you hope it takes you next?

A: So Far, my IG work has just been the documentation of my personal road trips and holidays. No assignments yet;) There are so many places I’d love to explore, document and share on Instagram. Although I’d be happy with a trip to Vancouver Island, I would love to document a road trip with my boys and our vintage trailer across Canada or down to California. A trip to Oz to catch up with family would be nice, too.

This shot is the wallpaper on my iPhone screen and one of my all time favourites. Mobile photography allows you to grab an image of a moment as it happens right in front of you. It's the right camera at the right time. There are so many picturesque scenes and moments if you just stop and look around. This was grabbed on our daily dog walk.

Q: What do you do for work?

A: I have worked professionally as a photographer for 20 years, but now I work full time as an Interactive Director at an ad agency in Whistler. We specialize in action sport and resort marketing, so it’s right up my alley. I still take on select work commercially and am excited about the opportunities that can come from Instagram.

Friday Instagrammer: This represents home for me. Great late light and typical Alberta scene. I like how it contrasts with my mountain shots.

Q: What gear do you use – list it all! What’s your favorite setup? Dream Setup?

A: I almost shoot exclusively iPhone for Instagram. I still use an old 4s and will update to the 6 eventually. I believe I have 2 to 3 DSLR shots in my gallery. I’ve shot Canon since the days of film and have a bunch of bodies in bags in the closets. Tucked in beside them is a Mamiya RB kit. My lenses go from fisheye and ultra wide 10mm up to 300mm. I’d love to upgrade some my glass to L series and upgrade my 7D as well. I am also interested in trying the mirror-less approach.

A tranquil scene on my daily dog walk just outside my office. This spot makes me appreciate where I live and work. Gorgeous scenery literally just out our door.

Q: Who are your 5 favourite Instgrammers

A: Wow tough question.

  1. @petehalvorsen has been an inspiration for years in many ways.
  2. There’s a great crew in Vancouver and I always enjoy seeing their work. Can I sneak a couple couples in as one: @bittadesign + @othellonine and @dudelum + @flolum
  3. @tylerforesthauser has some really sublime work and I’ve enjoyed commenting back and forth with him.
  4. I am huge fan of @bythebrush. Laura’s painterly approach is always gorgeous.
  5. @JaredChambers manages to always keep me impressed with both his landscapes and his portraiture.
This shot makes me laugh when I think I once said that cameras in a phone is a stupid idea. I stopped roadside on my commute to grab this handheld HDR photo on an iPhone and to this day the quality still blows my mind.
