Over the past weekend, I photographed the annual Banff Bike Fest for Canadian Cycling Magazine. With 5 races over 4 days, the Banff Bike Fest just might be the most scenic stage race in Canada.

The Lake Louise Road Race was plagued by freezing temperatures and pouring rain. I've always loved the uniform Lodgepole Pine Forests along the Bow Valley Parkway, which I included in this image of the Lake Louise Road Race during the Banff Bike Fest. The Banff Bike Fest ITT was shorter than in years past, but the route along teh Vermilion Lakes Road was spectacular. After heavy rains during the previous stage, cyclists enjoyed the early morning sunshine during the Vermilion Lakes ITT. Mt Rundle just doing its thing, standing pominently in the Bow Valley. This is a landscape photographers dream location! The Vermilion Lakes ITT was only 8 kms long and the top riders finished in under 10 minutes. Starting at 30 second intervals wasn't enough to keep riders from catching one another during the Banff Bike Fest ITT And another look at Mt Rundle. Is there a better backdrop to a cycling event in the world? Rain wreaked havoc on the elite men's race, causing multiple crashes coming off Banff Avenue. The Tunnel Mountain Road Race was the Banff Bike Fest' queen stage and it saw riders complete multiple laps on Tunnel Mountain. Suprise Corner, featured in both the prologue and Tunnel Mountain Trail Race, was the highlight of the Banff Bike Fest.
