Mike’s Bloggity Blog just posted a how-to post from Alberta’s Top Instagrammers. It’s something of a coincidence that Mike and I have ended up at a few instameets together but we didn’t immediately realized we knew each other. Both Mike and I went to the same junior high school back in Fredericton, New Brunswick.

My two tips related to consistency, but I was wavered with the importance between consistent and not being too consistent. Here’s what I said:
Don’t be Too Consistent: Post what you shoot, not only images that your followers enjoy. I showcase my travels on Instagram, but because I spend most of my time at home in Alberta most of my images feature the Canadian Rockies. On a recent road trip through California and Oregon, my photos didn’t get the same engagement simply because the scenery had changed. I’ve learned to keep things varied so a change of location doesn’t mean an abrupt change in style.
Be Really Consistent: It takes time to build a following on instagram.I treat it like a community, not a publicity or a popularity contest. I post each morning before 10AM, but I am equally diligent to engage with people whose work I like, with my own followers, and I respond to most comments. I’ve made great friends on instagram simply because I spend time in the app.
