Eleutheromania – (n.) an intense and irresistible desire for freedom.
I just sort of stumbled across this video, called Eleutheromania by Orla O’Muiri, while browsing through my Feedly content. It really hit home, as it seems to perfectly describe my Tour Divide expectations.
Simply put, I think I’ll always look back on Tour Divide, especially if I am successful, with fond memories. Unfortunately, I don’t suspect there will be much type-one fun during the ride itself.
Alastair Humphreys does a fantastic job describing two types of fun, while Jamie Bunchuk added a third. Here’s what it looks like:
Type One Fun
Type one fun is holiday fun. It’s like riding a roller coaster or railing a lift-access DH trail in the Whistler Bikepark. Type on fun brings a smile across your face, makes you laugh out loud and scream for joy. It’s about immediate satisfaction.
Dose: Type one fun should be enjoyed regularly, especially on holiday.
Type Two Fun
Type two fun requires time to reflect. It’s the result of completing a difficult objective. Battling through days of bad weather, pedaling up steep hills, and forgoing personal hygiene for weeks is rarely considered fun at the time. Over time, and plenty of R&R (and cold beer) the memories of suffering are replaced with fond thoughts of the overall experience. Type two fun is all about satisfaction in retrospect.
Dose: Type two fun should be planed regularly to help build self-esteem and confidence.
Type Three Fun
Type three fun is type two fun, gone wrong. While type-two fun requires a healthy dose of suffering and difficulty, type-three fun goes beyond the edge. It’s when injuries occur, or SPOT SOS evacuations are carried out. Type-Three fun is about having no fun before, during, or after the experience.
Dose: Type three fun should be avoided at all costs.
